Eat your Fruits and Veggies: Eating Seasonally
As I’m packing my bags for a short summer vacation, I wanted to leave all of you loyal readers with one last reminder to eat your fruits and veggies! The upcoming weeks and months are filled with fresh, seasonal produce, which makes the process of eating your fruits and veggies a whole lot cheaper, easier, and tastier.
It’s essential to get a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables into your diet– every day. Why? Because they provide the wide range of vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytochemicals our bodies use to maintain good health and energy levels, protect against the effects of aging, and reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. It’s important to sample the complete color spectrum every day to get the full health-promoting benefits of fruits and vegetables. See our March 9th column on the Colors of Health http://whatisnutritiontips.com/the-colors-of-health/
Also, by purchasing local foods in-season, you eliminate the environmental damage caused by shipping foods thousands of miles, your food dollar goes longer, and you will be able to enjoy the health benefits of eating fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Buying seasonal produce also provides an exciting opportunity to try new foods and to experiment with seasonal recipes. Try asking at your local fruit stand or grocery store for advice on what’s in season currently, and you’ll probably make a new friend for life.
Thanks for all of the positive feedback, and I’ll see you in a few weeks!
